Vancouver Fraser Port Authority
Centennial Expansion Partners (CXP)
The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is building the Centerm Expansion Project and South Shore Access Project to help meet increasing demand for containers shipped through the Port of Vancouver. These projects are being built by CXP with an expected completion date in 2022. The expansion to the existing terminal required the reclamation of land to add to the available operating terminal footprint. To efficiently achieve the land reclamation unsuitable native materials were dredged out and replaced by engineered backfills. A component of this backfill was bulk placed river sand behind the newly formed dykes. The project schedule required the placement of river sand to occur in the harbour during a period of time where dredging in the Fraser River was not available. Sand was stockpiled upland in Richmond along the Fraser River. The stockpile was placed near a barge ramp where it could be re-loaded onto barges and towed to site to keep critical path construction moving.
Delta Aggregates was engaged to perform the loading of barges early in the project, 3-5 barges per week. Further in the project the needs increased to approximately 12 barges per week. Loading occurred nearly around the clock 6 days per week. Weekly tonnages of 60,000 tonnes were common place during the peak loading weeks. All of the work was completed without any workers injuries or damage to equipment.
